A Safe Way to Update Your Eyeglasses in the Age of COVID-19

October 28, 2020

Are you reluctant to go for an eye exam during the current pandemic? There’s now an at-home alternative that offers a safe, convenient way to update your eyeglass Rx, without face-to-face contact, and avoid the risk of COVID-19 exposure.

A game-changing new device lets you test your vision and prescription needs and even get a new set of glasses without ever having to leave your house.

The technology is based on a patented smartphone eye refraction test

licensed from MIT. You simply download an app onto your phone, snap on a small Bluetooth device, and then follow the instructions. The device takes a series of measurements and provides your prescription needs. You can send this information to online eyewear suppliers and get your new pair of glasses.

“The last time I had my prescription updated was in 2017, before I even retired” says Helen, “I'd been meaning to get my eyes checked for a new prescription since the end of 2019, but never got around to it. By the time the pandemic hit, my glasses were definitely out of sync with my eyes. I thought I wouldn’t be able to update my prescription anytime soon, so this innovation is very, very welcomed!”

While many eye doctors are impressed with this innovation and agree that it can offer a quality prescription if someone is unable to visit their eye doctor, it’s currently only viable for prescriptions for single vision lenses (including astigmatism correction), but not a prescription for progressive lenses for someone with presbyopia. They also stress that the device is no substitute for a comprehensive eye exam, since it does not evaluate the health of the eyes or test eye pressure to rule out glaucoma.

Getting your eyes checked with an eye doctor remains essential to protect the health of your eyes. Just as important is making sure you have vision insurance to help cover routine visits, the cost of prescription glasses, and even many procedures.
