New Season, New Sunglasses

September 29, 2020

September might be here, but summer is still going strong – and so are the sun’s UV rays. Sunglasses with UV protection are critical to protect your eyes and even multiple other structures surrounding the eyes. Even eyelids can be damaged from the sun.

One way to test if the UV protection in your sunglasses has expired is to buy a UV flashlight. Shine the light on some paper money. When the money’s watermark lights up, position your sunglasses in front of the money. If the watermark disappears, you’ll know the UV protection in your glasses is still active.

But it’s generally a safe bet that if you’ve had your sunglasses for more than two years, the UV protection has expired. Prolonged exposure of sunglasses to UV rays eventually damage the coating of the UV protection. It’s time to replace your current pair with a new pair.

Sunglasses should be labelled with at least 400 UV. That means the sunglasses have will protect 99 to 100 percent of the sun’s ultra-violet rays. You also want a pair that offers both UVA and UVB protection.

Sunglasses with UV protection are a great tool to keep your eyes healthy. Another great tool to keep your eyes healthy (and save hundreds on exams, eyeglasses, and contact lenses) is with a simple low-cost Vision Insurance Plan through IRTA and AMBA.
