See the Difference Donating an Old Pair of Glasses Can Make

March 31, 2022

Over 1 billion people with vision loss across the world lack access to eye care. Simply donate your old eyeglasses, and you can dramatically change lives. For instance, a donated pair of glasses could potentially help an older American read a prescription bottle or be an essential element in helping a child around the world learn to read.

To donate a pair of eyeglasses that you no longer use is easy and doesn't cost you anything. If you’re already getting rid of an old pair of glasses as part of your spring cleaning, even better! You accomplish your goal while generously doing something potentially life-changing for someone in need.

How to Donate Eyeglasses

There are several U.S. and global nonprofit groups that accept eyeglasses donations. A quick search online can help you find a location convenient for you.

Some groups accept used glasses. However, others take only donations of new glasses. Depending on the organization, you may be able to donate:

  • Used prescription glasses in good condition
  • Non-prescription reading glasses
  • New glasses
  • Glasses frames

The organization you donate your old glasses to will inspect them to make sure they’re in good condition and confirm the prescription. Your old glasses will get matched to someone who needs them. Many donated eyeglasses are used in medical missions to other countries.

Want to go the extra mile? You can also donate new frames and sunglasses. Many organizations prefer this so they can provide new glasses tailored to the exact prescription for individuals in need.

After you've helped others with your old glasses, IRTA and AMBA make it easy to get a new pair of frames! Our Vision Plan provides coverage on new frames, with a $150 allowance on a wide selection of frames, and even bigger savings on featured brands!
